[스크랩] 오라토리오 `메시아` (헨델) 전곡 듣기와 해설

모든 음악 가운데 가장 감격스러운 음악의 하나로 꼽히고 있는 '메시아'는 헨델이 57세가 되던 해
(1742년) 4월 12일 아일랜드의 더블린(Dublin)에서 초연되었다. 메시아란 말은 구세주라는 뜻이나
본래는 기름을 부은 자란 뜻인데, 그것이 다시 신으로부터 선택을 받은 자 혹은 괴로운 자를
해방하는 자 등의 뜻으로 쓰이게 되었다. 물론 여기서는 예수 그리스도를 말하는 것이다.
더블린 시민들로부터 열광적인 환영을 받았던 그 공연에서 헨델 자신도 상당한 수익을 얻기는
했으나, 그 음악회가 애초부터 자선음악회였던 만큼 그 수익의 대부분은 자선사업의 기금으로
쓰였다.
'메시아'가 종교음악임에는 틀림없지만 헨델의 오라토리오가 거의 다 그렇듯이 '메시아'또한
교회를 위한 교회음악이라기 보다는 극장에서 상연할 목적으로 작곡된 연주회용 작품이며,
바로 그렇기 때문에 지금도 기독교 신자거나 비신자거나를 막론하고 전세계 음악 애호가들
로부터 가장 광범위한 사랑을 받고 있는 것이다. 그래서 이제는 종교 음악이라는 한계를 아
득히 벗어나 인류 공유의 위대한 음악적 유산으로 승화되고 있다. 좌절과 절망의 구렁텅이
에서 허덕이던 얼마나 많은 사람들이 그곳에서 광명과 영광 그리고 열광을 되찾았던 것일
까? 그것은 헨델 자신이 경제적으로나 정신적으로 가장 혹독한 위기에 처해 있을 때 이 곡
이 작곡된 탓이기도 할 것이다.
이탈리아풍의 오페라에 실증을 느끼고 새로운 음악양식을 갈구하던 영국의 청중들과 비평가
들로부터 소외당하고, 한때는 온 영국을 지배했던 헨델도 이제는 음악회마다 실패를 거듭하
던 끝에, 마침내 영어의 대사를 사용한 오라토리오를 몇곡 작곡했다. 그러나 그것도 그가 누
렸던 왕년의 명성을 하루 아침에 그에게 되안겨 주지는 않았다.
그리하여 그의 빚은 더욱 가중되었고 날이 갈수록 더욱 혹독한 좌절감에 시달리고 있었다.
이러한 경제적 및 정신적인 불안으로 마침내 그는 갖가지 병을 얻어 쓰러지고 말았다. 그의
건강상태가 어느 정도로 악화되었는지에 관해서는 이론이 분분하지만, 적어도 기거가 부자
유스러운 정도였다는 것만은 확실했던 듯 하다.
이러한 역경속에서 그는 더블린의 자선 음악단체인 필하모니아협회(Philharmonic Society)로
부터 의뢰를 받고 '메시아'의 작곡에 착수했다. 헨델은 언제나 자선단체에 협력해 왔고, 가장
어려운 시기에 조차 그는 자선 사업을 위해서는 아낌없이 호주머니를 털어주는 사람이었다.
더군다나 그것을 작곡한 뒤 그 초연을 위해 아일랜드로 여행함으로써 건강을 회복할 수 있
을지도 모른다는 생각에서 그는 '메시아'의 작곡에 전념하기 시작했다.
메시아의 대사는 거의가 구약성서에서 추린 것이지만 그것이 누구에 의한 것인지는 명확치
않고, 다만 그 대사를 헨델에게 전해준 사람이 제넨즈(Charles Jenens)라는 것만 알려져 있
을 뿐이다. 물론 제넨즈는 그것이 자신의 작품이라고 우겼고 지금도 일부에서는 그대로 믿
고 있지만, 제넨즈의 말을 액면대로 받아 들이기에는 그 선택이나 배열이 너무나 잘 되었다
는 것이 일반적인 정평이다.
부유해서 별로 하는 일없이 문학에 골몰하다가 마침내 스스로를 문학의 천재이자 진정한
이해자라고 우쭐거리고 있었던 제넨즈라는 자는 세익스피어의 작품을 개작하는 등 어쭙지
않은 짓을 하기 일쑤였는데, 말하자면 사소한 금전으로 과대망상증을 사들여 착각속에서 만
족을 얻고 있었던 딜레탄트였다. 동시대의 석학 존슨(Sanuel Johnson)은 그에 대해, "그는
자신에 도취되어 마침내 머리가 돌아버린 천치여서, 그의 머리속에 가득찬 것은 허영심 이
외에 아무것도 없다.... 스스로를 성스러운 존재라 착각하고 있는 그는 거리에 나갈 때면 속
된 사람들의 입김이 행여나 그의 옥체에 스며들지 않도록 향수를 뿌린 솜으로 코를 막고 다
닌다는 미치광이에 지나지 않는다"라고 비꼬기도 했다. 어쨌든 '메시아'의 대사가 하이든의
'천지창조'와는 비길 수도 없을 만큼 훌륭하다는 점, 그리고 그것이 헨델의 영감을 크게 자
극했으리라는 점에는 아무도 이의가 없을 것이다.
'메시아'의 작곡은 1741년 8월 22일에 시작되어 24일만에 완성되었다. 이러한 대작이 고작
24일만에 작곡되었다는 사실에 우리는 그저 경탄하는 대신에 그것을 작곡하는데 헨델이 얼
마나 연중했었던가를 좀더 생생하게 생각해 보려고 한다면 우리는 더욱 새로운 감회를 불러
일으킬 수도 있을 것이다. 사실 헨델은 24일 동안 거의 침식조차 잊은채 마치 열에 뜬 사람
처럼 열광된 상태에서 이 곡을 작곡했다고 한다. 실의와 좌절이 거듭된 끝에 창조된 그 드
높은 세계, 일찍이 어떤 음악도 성취하지 못했던 영광의 구현, 미켈란젤로의 천지창조에나
견줄만한 그 웅장한 스케일과 구도..곡 하나 하나를 완성할 때마다 환희의 눈물이 양 볼을
가득 적셔 흘렀고, 다시금 열에 떠서 다음 곡을 스케치했다는 그 때의 정황을 굳이 되살려
보지 않더라도 우리는 가슴속으로부터 솟구쳐 오르는 감격과 열광을 느끼지 않고서는 이 곡
을 들을 수 없을 것이다. 아니, 웅장한 스케일을 운운하는 것으로만 '메시아'를 이야기 할 수
는 결코 없다.
전 3부로 구성된 '메시아'는 제1부가 '예언과 탄생', 제2부가 '수난과 속죄', 제3부가 '부활과
영생'으로 되어 있다.

제1부
'예언과 탄생' 전체적으로 밝고도 온화한 분위기에 싸여 있으면서도 그 저변에서 조용히 맴돌면서
솟구쳐 오르는 열띤 흥분과 열광을 듣는 사람으로 하여금 저도 모르게 가슴이 설레게 하는 극적인
요소로 가득 차 있다.

제2부
예수의 '수난과 속죄' 극적인 긴장감이 더욱 제고되어 가장 감동적인 부분을 이루고 있으며, 전곡을
통해 합창곡이 제일 많이 등장하는 것도 제2부의 특징이다.
복음의 선포와 그 최후의 승리를 이야기한다. 할렐루야 코러스.(이 작품이 런던에서 초연되었을
때는 영국의 왕도 입석했는데, 할렐루야가 나올 무렵에는 감격한 나머지 왕이 자리에서 벌떡
일어났다는 이야기도 있다.)

제3부
'부활과 영원한 생명' 부활에 대한 신념이 부각되어 전체적으로 밝고도 빛으로 충만된 분위기를
엮어주고 있다.
굳은 신앙의 고백으로 시작하여 영생의 찬미로 끝닌다. '우리는 아느니 속죄자의 영생을...' 최후에
아멘의 코러스로 끝난다.
이러한 제3의 분위기는 비단 제3부에 국한되지 않고 마치 전곡이 제3부의 부활을 준비하는 양 작품
전체에 그러한 빛이 깔려 있음을 간과해서는 안될 것이다.
그렇기 때문에 단조가 지배적인 바흐의 작품과는 달리, '메시아'는 가장 비감적인 제21번의
알토 아리아에서조차 장조로 되어 있으며, 전반적으로 더욱 밝고 화려한 색채가 지배하고
있는 것이다.

'메시아'에는 바흐의 '마태 수난곡'에서와 같이 우리들의 깊은 오열을 유발하는 요소가 적다
는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 제 14곡의 소프라노 레시티티브, 제8번의 알토 및 소프라노 아리
아, 제20곡의 합창, 제36곡 및 제43곡의 소프라노 아리아 등, 그 명상적인 아라베스크, 그 천
사의 숨결과도 같은 아름다운을 뉘라서 바흐의 작품에 견주에 손색이 있다고 말할 수 있을
것인가? 아득히 높은 험준한 산의 아친 이슬과도 같이 맑고 깨끗하게 울리는 그 영롱함을
우리는 어디서 다시 찾을 수 있을 것이가?
'메시아'가 더블린에서 초연되었을 때는 청중들이 너무나 쇄도하여 부인들은 후프(스커트를
펑퍼짐하게 벌어지게 하는 버팀살-당시에는 부인들이 공식석상에 나들이 할 때는 그런 의
상을 입는 것이 유행이었다)를 착용하지 말아야 하며, 신사들은 칼을 차지 말도록 광고를
내야 할 정도였다. 그리고 공연이 끝나자 한 신문(Falkners' Journal)에서는 '장내를 메운 청
중들에서 '메시아'가 안겨준 황홀감은 뭐라 표현할래야 표현할 길이 없다'고 최대의 찬사를
아끼지 않았다.
'메시아'가 초연된 이래 그것이 음악 애호가들과 음악가들에 끼친 영향은 이루 다 헤아릴 수
없을 것이다. 하이든이 '천지창조'를 작곡했던 것도 '메시아'에서 느꼈던 감동에 자극되어서
였고, 베토베 또한 이 메시아의 작곡자를 가장 위대한 음악가로 존경했었다. 그가 임종이 가
까워 병석에 누었을 때조차 헨델의 악보에 대한 연구를 게을리 하지 않았음은 잘 알려진 이
야기이다. 그리고 이미 회복이 불가능하다는 것을 스스로 알고 있었을 때 그를 돌보던 의사
봐부르흐(Wawurch)가 봄이 오면 건강이 회복될 것이라고 말하자 그는 '만인 나를 소생하게
하는 의사가 있다면 그의 이름은 기적(Wonderful)일 것이오'라고 말했다고 한다. 이 말은
'메시아'의 제12곡에 나오는 구절(His name shall be called Wonderful)을 그대로 인용한 것
이며, 이것으로 보아도 베토벤이 '메시아'를 얼마나 속속들이 연구하고 있었던가를 짐작케
해 준다.
그러나 '메시아'에 열광한 사람은 비단 베토벤이나 더블린의 시민들만은 아니다. 음악을 사
랑하는 사람이라면 누구나, 시대와 국경을 초월해서 연원토록 '메시아'를 사랑할 것이다.
